Minor Moves: Lobaton, Ashley, Percival

Montgomery Biscuits[Via email from the Montgomery Biscuits' broadcaster Jon Laaser.]

The Tampa Bay Rays have made the following roster moves affecting Double-A Montgomery prior to their series finale with Huntsville:

C Jose Lobaton claimed off waivers from the San Diego Padres by the Tampa Bay Rays and assigned to Montgomery, C Nevin Ashley reassigned to Charlotte (A+) [24 + 1].

Lobaton, a newly acquired member of the Rays’ 40-man roster, made his Major League debut earlier this season with San Diego (NL). He appeared in seven games with the Padres, hitting .176 (3-17). He also appeared in 39 games with Triple-A Portland in the Padres’ system, hitting .241 with three home runs and eight RBIs. The 24-year old was rated as the best defensive catcher in the San Diego chain prior to the season by Baseball America.

To make room for Lobaton on the 40-man roster, the Rays have transferred RHP Troy Percival (shoulder) from the 15-day Disabled List to the 60-day Disabled List.

The corresponding moves keep the Biscuits at the Southern League maximum of 24 active players. One player (Jason Perry) is currently on the Disabled List.

Lobaton will be assigned a uniform number upon his arrival in Montgomery for Friday night’s series finale with Huntsville.

  2. Wow, another catcher, just whar Charlotte needed. Already too many there to get playing time. Paxton leading the team in hitting and can't get playing time. Ashley's addition will really complicate things.

  3. So, who will be the starting catcher? Wonder if anyone will be be pushed back to Bowling Green-maybe McCormick? Tough to see their team hitting leader, Paxton, sit. Saw he played 1st base last night, but not tonight. Maybe he can play more games at first.
