Charlotte Stone Crabs Week in Review: July 2-July 8

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Charlotte Stone Crabs went 6-2 on the week and ended the week in a tie for first place in the FSL South Division. The week was highlighted by a series sweep at home against the Sarasota Reds. The Stone Crabs also broke the attendance record for a minor league game at Charlotte Sports Park with a crowd of 7,340 on Independence Day. At weeks end, the Stone Crabs held a five game winning streak.

Hitting Leaders: John Matulia leads active Stone Crabs with a batting average of .327, followed by Ian Paxton (.319), Henry Wrigley (.306), Cody Cipriano (.297) and Shawn O’Malley (.257) to round out the top five. Cody Cipriano leads the team in doubles with 16 and home runs with 5. Emeel Salem is tied for third in the league in triples with 5. Shawn O’Malley is fourth in the league with 30 stolen bases.

Pitching Leaders: Matt Gorgen continues to dominate from the bullpen, lowering his ERA to 0.63 with 12 saves and a 4-0 record on the season. Darin Downs leads the starters with an ERA of 2.31 which is fourth in the league. Downs also took the league lead in strikeouts with 84. David Newman is ranked eighth in the league with 71 strikeouts. Jeremy Hall now leads the league in wins with 9 on the season.

Team Stats: The offense maintain their eighth place rank in offense with a team average of .247. The team is fourth in the league in triples with 23 and second in stolen bases with 103. The pitching staff improved to fifth place in the league with an ERA of 3.54. The staff is has struck out 603 batters this season which is third in the league.
