
Charlotte added another run in the third inning. Emeel Salem singled on a bunt to second and then later scored on an RBI double by Henry Wrigley. The Stone Crabs increased their lead to 3-0.
Jupiter scored their first run of the night in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brandon Tripp hit a solo home run to right field and bring the Hammerheads within 2 runs.
The Stone Crabs led of the sixth inning with back to back singles by Henry Wrigley and Cody Cipriano. John Matulia then drew a walk to load the bases. Christian Lopez was hit by a pitch to score Wrigley and Shawn O’Malley drew a walk to score Cipriano and give the Stone Crabs a 5-1 lead.
But the Hammerheads matched the Stone Crabs by also posting two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Louis Ott started off the inning by drawing a walk. Ben Harrison cleared the bases with a two run homer and the Hammerheads pulled back within two runs, 5-3.
The Stone Crabs picked up some insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Cody Cipriano got things going with a walk and then later scored on a double by John Matulia. Matt Hall followed with a single to score Matulia and increase the Charlotte lead to 7-3.
The Hammerheads fought back to score another run in the eighth as Ben Harrison hit his second home run of the night, a solo shot to right. But Matt Gorgen took over the mound in the ninth and closed the door to give the Stone Crabs a 7-4 victory.
Darin Downs improved to 8-4 with the win by pitching 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 5 and walking 2. Jose Mejias pitched 2 innings in relief and allowed 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 1 and walking 2. Matt Gorgen pitched a no hit inning to record the save. Elih Villanueva was the losing pitcher for Jupiter.
What Went Right: Cody Cipriano; 2 for 3 with a double, 2 RBI’s and 3 runs scored while walking twice. John Matulia; 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and RBI and a run scored.
What Went Wrong: Shawn O’Malley; 0-4 with 3 strikeouts.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs will play the Hammerheads in game two of the series on Thursday at Roger Dean Stadium. David Newmann (4-3) is scheduled to pitch against Jeff Allison (3-7).
