Charlotte Stone Crabs exchange lead four times in win over Sarasota

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs and Sarasota Reds exchanged the lead several times but at the end of the night it was the Stone Crabs that held on to take the win 6-5 at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Sarasota Reds scored first in the first inning. Justin Reed and Dave Sappelt lead off with back to back singles and Denis Phipps was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Sarasota. Devin Mesoraco delivered a sac fly to left to score Reed and give the Reds a 1-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Emeel Salem singled to short and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Henry Wrigley then hit an RBI single to center that allowed Salem to score and tie the game at 1 run each.

Charlotte took the lead in the second inning thanks to three consecutive walk issued by Luis Montano to load the bases for the Stone Crabs. Emeel Salem singled home John Matulia and Matt Hal to give the Stone Crabs a 3-1 lead.

But the lead did not last long as the Reds put two runs on the board in the third to tie the game. Justin Reed and Dave Sappelt reached on walks and then advanced by a sac bunt laid down by Denis Phipps. Neftali Soto drove in the first run by grounding out to short. The second run came on an RBI single by Devin Mesoraco and the game was now tied at 3.

The Stone Crabs regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Henry Wrigley, his fourth of the year. The Stone Crabs now held the lead 4-3.

The Reds added another run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4. Shane Carlson led off the inning with a double to right followed by a single by Justin Reed. Dave Sappelt hit a sac fly to score Carlson and tie the game.

Sarasota took the lead in the sixth inning. Devin Mesoraco got things started with a double to left. Jake Kahaulelio reached base on fielding error by Cody Cipriano and advanced Mesoraco to third. Jose Gualdron followed with a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Mesoraco to score and give the Reds a 5-4 lead.

The Stone Crabs fought back in the seventh. Matt Hall and Emeel Salem singled to get things started. Cody Cipriano was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Henry Wrigley followed with an RBI single to left that scored hall. Reid Fronk was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Salem and give Charlotte the 6-5 lead in which they held until the end.

What Went Right: Henry Wrigley; 3 for 4 with a home run, 3 RBI’s and a run scored. Emeel Salem; also 3 for 4, 2 RBI’s, a run scored and 2 stolen bases.

What Went Wrong: Ian Paxton; did not reach base going 0-4 on the night.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs look to sweep the Reds as the finish the series Tuesday night at Charlotte Sports Park. Jesse Darcy (2-7) will be on the hill for Charlotte facing Scott Carroll (1-2).
