Scores and Highlights from 5/7

Durham Bulls, Syracuse Chief (Postponed/Rain)
Monday's game between the Bulls and Chiefs was postponed due to rain. It will be played on Tuesday as part of a doubleheader.

Chattanooga Lookouts 5, Montgomery Biscuits 3
The Biscuits could not recover from an early deficit as they lost to the Lookouts. The two clubs exchanged a pair of runs in the beginning of the game and again in the fifth but it was a two run third by the Lookouts that would be the difference. Omar Luna was 2 for 3 on the night. Southern League Hitter of the Week Kyeong Kang provided the clubs only extra base hit on the night, a double. Jake Thompson suffered the loss while Marquis Fleming and Kirby Yates combined for 3 shut-out innings to wrap up the game.

Clearwater Thresher 6, Charlotte Stone Crabs 5
Despite having the lead twice on the night, the Stone Crabs could not hold onto the lead as they lost their third straight game against the Threshers. The loss marked the first time since the inaugural season that the Stone Crabs had lost a series to the Threshers. Mayo Acosta was 2 for 4 with a double and a home run. Mikie Mahtook was also 2 for 4 with an RBI. Cody Rogers added to the offense with a two run homer in the third. Wilking Rodriguez was responsible for five of the runs on the mound by the sixth run came off George Jensen who suffered the loss.

Bowling Green Hot Rods 4, Lake County Captains 0
Jake Floethe pitched six scoreless innings allowing just one hit to guide the Hot Rods to a shut-out win over the Captains. Keeping the Captains off the scoreboard helped the Hot Rods offense go to work and put up four runs to ensure the win. Josh Sale was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Drew Vettleson drove home two runs with a double. Todd Glassmann and Taylor Motter each had an RBI. Andrew Bellatti three shut-out innings to record his first save of the season.

  1. How much longer does Nommenson Have? He was playing in some extended games about a week and a half ago. Thought he would have been playing by now. Do you think he will go to charlotte or straight to the biscuits? charlotte already has 5 outfielders to be sure they wouldn't add a 6th.

  2. I just looked at the depth chart and they have way to many outfielders between AAA and High A. You have 4 in AAA. 5 in AA and 5 in High A. In AA you have 1 on the Dl so that makes 6 total and in High A you have 2 on the DL. They are going to run into some issues when everyone gets back healthy. It might be time to let some of those older guys go who haven't proved themselves for years and years. I mean Mahtook and Morrison are going to play everyday in High A. So that leaves 3 guys to share 1 spot (LF) Thats a problem.

  4. Why don't they try and trade some of their outfielders?

  5. Very few of the AAA/AA/A+ outfielders are going to block anyone from moving up, and they are more likely to be released than traded. Who wants guys in the their late 20s in AA? Every org has plenty of those or can sign free agents. They reason they need Coon in Montgomery is that no one else can play center, and Nommensen can't if he starts there. Mahtook or Rogers (or Kiermaier) will be have to be ready to move up before they can get rid of Coon.

  6. We need Coon? Couldn't Murrill or Scelfo have played center? (except now they're gone.) Why is Miranda playing 1st in Durham and not Wrigley? One of the previous writers may be right---Tampa Bay minor leagues need a shake up. If you look at TB farm statistics, something's just not working this year....or, is it still too early to tell?

    1. Murrill could have, Scelfo probably not at this point. I don't think I've seen anyone who thinks Miranda is worth a roster spot, and most would like to see Wrigley get a shot at AAA, sooner rather than later.

What kind of a shake up would you like to see? Serious question. At this point they can't just cut 20 guys and find 20 new ones. Are you just talking a couple guys on each team?

  7. Im a sure they will cut guys that haven't gotten a chance and never will get a chance. Kiermaier for whatever reasons continues to get chance after chance (And he continues to get hurt) He didn't do good last year in BG and then he comes to charlotte and gets hurt 5 games in. (Yea he was batting over .300) But only in 18 abs. Rogers continues to get chances and he hasn't shown anything either. Nommenson is 25.5 and he is still in charlotte? Come on. The guys they will cut will be guys that don't get chances even when there is an opportunity to give them a chance. Salem will be cut, Lyerly will get cut (Who has never been given a fair chance after his first year) He had a great year last year moved up at the end only to sit the bench when they had 2 outfielders they put an infielder in the outfield, and tinoco who has done well, but certainly hasn't been giving a chance last year after his numbers were outstanding. Yes I know money talks and of course they are going to let there high round draft picks have the opportunity first, but dang at some point and time you have to give others a chance.

  12. When are they going to move some pitchers? The overachievers are in Bowling Green! Rivero, Carpenter and Floethe have stepped up big time! They have 10 of the 17 wins...they all throw strikes! Floethe's last game being a 1 hitter in 6 innings and 11-1 groundballs. Rivero has been lights out should have 5 wins not 2. Carpenter just pounds the strike zone and knows how to pitch. The relievers that are doing great, Partridge has been the best so far along with Mackeachin both should be starting in Bowling Green or moved up to relieve in Charlotte. Tampa has got to make some decisions! They have limited choices of everyday players but a great many pitchers who have good ceilings.
