Jeremy Hellickson In 20 Starts

Jeremy HellicksonJeremy Hellickson had a tremendous season in 2009, possibly surpassing Wade Davis as the Rays top pitching prospect. He made 20 regular season starts for the Montgomery Biscuits and Durham Bulls. Without looking, see if you can guess the answers to these questions.

In how many of his 20 starts did he:

a) Allow more than two earned runs?

b) Allow more than five hits?

c) Allow more than two extra-base hits?

d) Allow more than two walks?

Answers:

a) 3 times. (8/25 - 3 ER, 8/4 - 6, 7/3 - 3)

b) 1 time. (8/4 - 6 H's)

c) 2 times. (7/3 - 3 XBH's, 4/30 - 3)

d) 2 times. (8/15 - 3 BB's, 7/24 - 3)

I still have Davis slightly ahead, but Hellickson certainly narrowed the gap this season. Here are his lines from all 20 starts.

  1. I haven't done much legwork on my top 30 list research but I think I'll have Hellickson slightly ahead. Maybe not though.

  2. I have:

    1. Davis
    2. Hellickson
    3. Moore

Then it gets tough. On my early list I have:

    4. Lobstein - yep, over Barnese, but it's close
    5. Barnese
    6. Cobb - impressed me a lot this year
    7. McEachern - hope he goes to BG next year at 19
    8. Torres - probably will move up

Then a group of Colome, Cruz, Gorgen and Talbot. It's going to be tough to narrow down to 30, let alone 15.

  3. I would think Newmann, McGee, and A. Rodriguez (maybe Wilking, too) should all be in the 8-12 range, before Gorgen and Talbot.

  4. We're early in the rankings, so don't put any of these in stone. It's tough to do, balancing age, level, scouting, stats, pedigree, projectability, etc. And everyone puts different weight to different things. That's why we combine multiple opinions to come up with our rankings.

McGee, Talbot, Downs and Suarez are hard to place because they are coming back from injuries. You hate to ding a guy too much for being hurt, but you just don't know where they'll be when they come back.

On Newmann, 24 and not in AA yet. I thought he had a good year, very good even, but age/level has him at 18th right now.

McGee may end up as a reliever, but at least he appears healthy. Penciled in at 15th now.

A-Rod was 21 and in AA, which was quite a challenge, but he had some great outings. Have him at 20th now.

W-Rod was 19 at Princeton and showed excellent command. Because he's so far away, at 16 right now.

Our pitching is so strong that I bet our LEFTHANDERS ALONE would match up well with some organization's overall Top 15 pitchers. Moore, Lobstein, Torres, FDLSantos, McGee, Newmann, Downs, Partridge, Satow, Dettrich, Rosscup, Stabelfeld, Dott, Kevin James, Shawn Smith, Schenk, Jarman...

And we have some righthanders too :). Not gonna be an easy task, but it will be fun.

  6. Heath Rollins and Ryan Reid are not surprised by this jinx.

  7. And apparently I can't jinx Cobb, 5.0 w/ 1 ER tonight. But he did give up 6 hits and 3 walks. So maybe my jinx is working..............

  8. Hellickson's final line tonight: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 12 SO, 2 HR. 12 in 5.2, wow.

  10. looking at partridge stats this year where do you think a good fit for him will be next year

  11. I assume Partridge will go to Princeton. He'll be age 19 so the Appy should be ok for him. Like McEachern this year, if he starts well he might move up to Hudson Valley (McEachern did it at age 18).
