Charlotte Stone Crabs fall to Jupiter Hammerheads

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs fell to the Jupiter Hammerheads 6-5 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Stone Crabs took the lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Shawn Williams that put the Stone Crabs ahead 1-0.

The Stone Crabs added another run in the second inning. Reid Fronk doubled to get things going. Matt Hall later followed with an RBI single that scored Fronk and increased the lead to 2-0.

Jupiter battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning. Brandon Tripp and Hunter Mense both reached base after being hit by a pitch. Then Miguel Fermin drove them home with a two run single to left, tying the game at two runs a piece.

Charlotte broke the tie in the third inning. Emeel Salem led off the inning with a single to right. Salem then stole second base and later advanced to third on a ground out by Sawn Williams. John Matulia followed with a ground ball that scored Salem and allowed the Stone Crabs to regain the lead 3-2.

But the Hammerheads answered back in the home half of the third. Ryan Curry reached on a fielder’s choice. Then Ben Harrison followed with a two run home run that gave Jupiter the lead 4-3.

The Stone Crabs fought back to take the lead again in the fifth inning. Emeel Salem reach on an error and John Matulia drew a walk to get things going. Henry Wrigley followed with a ground ball that scored Salem and moved Matulia to third. Matt Sweeney then drew a walk to load the bases for the Stone Crabs. Ian Paxton then delivered an RBI single to score Matulia and give the Stone Crabs a 5-4 lead.

The Hammerheads were not finished as they posted two more runs to take the lead in the seventh. Miguel Fermin and Luis Ott reached bases on singles. Then Ben Harrison drew a two out walk to load the bases. Brandon Trip followed with a two run single that gave Jupiter the 6-5 margin of victory.

Alex Cobb pitched 6 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 2 hits with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks. Kevin Boggan suffered the loss, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with a walk. Josh Satow pitched the final frame allowing no runs on 1 hit with a strikeout and a walk. Peter Andrelczyk was the winning pitcher for Jupiter.

What Went Right: Emeel Salem; returned to the lineup and went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base.

What Went Wrong: Matt Sweeney; 0 for 3 with 2 K’s.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs return home for the final regular season series, playing against the Sarasota Reds (24-42). David Newmann will be pitching against Lance Janke.
