Weekend Moves, Open Thread

The Montgomery Biscuits have finally put RHP Joseph Cruz (forearm) on the 7-day DL. A 30th round pick in the 2007 draft, Cruz had a nice start to his career until injuries started taking their toll in 2011:

The Rays have purchased RHRP Matt Nevarez from the Wichita Wingnuts of the independent American Association. The 25 year-old was a 10th round pick of the Texas Rangers back in 2005. Nevarez had 45 strikeouts in 26.1 innings this year as the closer for the Wingnuts. He was just signed yesterday so he hasn't been assigned to an affiliate yet, but Stacy Long says it going to be Charlotte, so we'll go with Charlotte.

I'll add to this if there are more transactions over the weekend. Feel free to use the comments as an open thread to discuss any teams or players.

This is pretty well done by the Princeton Rays:

The Rays placed DH Luke Scott on the 15-day DL with a mild right external oblique strain. This unfortunately means Hideki Matsui is still with the team.

The Rays recalled LHRP Cesar Ramos from the Durham Bulls to replace Scott on the 25-man roster, which is full.

Catcher Craig Albernaz was assigned to the Bulls from the Hudson Valley Renegades, not that he's ever been there.

In more bad news involving the Rays and Japanese players, RHSP Alex Cobb had to leave tonight's start at the end of the second inning after Ichiro Suzuki lined a ball off Cobb's right shin. The Rays say x-rays are negative and it is only a bruise.

After the game Ramos was optioned back to Durham. Another pitcher will be called up on Sunday.

-------------------- SUNDAY --------------------

The Rays recalled RHRP Brandon Gomes from the Durham Bulls on Sunday morning.

LHRP Adam Liberatore has been promoted from Montgomery to Durham. He already appeared in one game for Durham earlier this year:

The Durham Bulls have placed RHRP Romulo Sanchez on the 7-day DL. He has a 6.22 ERA in 33 relief appearances this season for Durham.

The Durham Bulls have activated catcher Nevin Ashley from the DL. He completed his rehab assignment with the GCL Rays. Ashley hasn't played for the Bulls since he broke his hand in April.

After Sunday's game the Rays have optioned RHRP Brandon Gomes back to Durham. Doesn't sound like there will be a corresponding move until Tuesday.

  1. Its ironic, I was just looking at Matt Nevarez's page at Baseball reference.com and was wondering why the Rays never tried to get him, especially after the changes he made in the independent leagues.............. I guess this answers my question.

  2. He missed 2006 and 2007 with TJS. The Rangers were still trying to keep him as a starter in 2008 when he hurt the elbow again, so from then on he's been a reliever. Just like Kyle Farnsworth he was once traded for possible HOF catcher Ivan Rodriguez. Nevarez was sent (along with Jose Vallejo) from Texas to Houston for I-Rod on August 18, 2009. The next 2 years he walked over 10 batters per 9 and was released by the Astros.

Montgomery is a player short with Cruz out, so if he's going to Charlotte I guess a pitcher from Charlotte moves up to AA. Patterson maybe? Would have been easier to just send Nevarez to Montgomery, he's 25.

  3. Had a great time watching the GCL Rays in Sarasota today. Spent half the game sitting right next to the dugout, clouds permitting. Some observations- Cesar Perez (one mil. bonus baby) starting at 3b looked good in a uniform but at 19 with 550ish OPS, a disappointment. Yoel Araujo (800K) didn't start. Spencer Edwards really hits the ball hard and has good speed. His arm didn't impress me but he made some good plays- an athlete. Kes Carter DHed and never had the opportunity to run due to 2 SO's and maybe a popout. I really wanted to see if he would run all out.I asked an on field non player if and when he would return to BG and he said probably BG but he didn't disclose a time table. Bralin Jackson has a great athletic look and played CF. He seemed to have good face (Joeism). Clayton Henning is kind of a Ty Morrison type, similar build, played RF. Eierman didn't play. Paul Hoover barked at one player, don't know who, "one of your jobs is to pay attention to what's going on". May have been Eierman as he soon stood next to Hoover with clipboard in hand. Maybe 30 people in attendance incl. a little league team. Highly recommend this experience.
