Monday Moves

Mikie Mahtook
The Rays assigned RHRP Matt Nevarez to the Charlotte Stone Crabs. He was purchased on Friday from the Wichita Wingnuts of the independent American Association.

The Montgomery Biscuits placed DH/1B Ryan Garko on the 7-day DL with an oblique injury. He is batting .305/.396/.448 in 56 games since being signed out of indy ball this spring.

Outfielder Mikie Mahtook was promoted from Charlotte to the Montgomery Biscuits. He didn't play on Monday so expect him in Montgomery soon. He leaves Charlotte with a .290/.358/.419 line in 341 at-bats. Of his 99 hits, 27 went for extra bases (15 2B, 7 3B, 5 HR).

Todd Glaesmann
Outfielder Todd Glaesmann was promoted from Bowling Green to the Charlotte Stone Crabs. Like Mahtook, Glaesmann also didn't play Monday. He's also tied with Mahtook at 99 hits on the year, but he's hit for more power with 35 XBH (17 2B, 5 3B, 13 HR). He batted .281/.338/.469 over 352 at-bats for the Hot Rods this season.

Over the offseason Mahtook played in the Arizona Fall League and Glaesmann in the winter Australian Baseball League.

The Biscuits and Stone Crabs rosters are now full at 25, but the Hot Rods are one short and need an outfielder. Nothing official, but I'm going to guess it will be Kes Carter, who has been rehabbing with the GCL Rays. In six Gulf Coast League games he's hitting .412 in 17 at-bats.

Season stats for Garko, Mahtook and Glaesmann:
Batter Age Team AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Ryan Garko 31.5 MTG 210 32 64 9 0 7 36 0 0 26 44 .305 .396 .448 .844
Mikie Mahtook 22.6 CHA 341 44 99 15 7 5 37 19 6 29 71 .290 .358 .419 .777
Todd Glaesmann 21.7 BWG 352 57 99 17 5 13 53 8 3 22 89 .281 .338 .469 .806

  1. Todd was the guy who impressed me the most in Spring Training this year, good to see him getting promoted to a place where I can see him play more. Nevarez should be interesting to see as well.

  2. Nothing on Kes Carter yet. The GCL Rays don't play until 7 tonight, so can't check to see if he's in today's lineup yet.

    2. Daniel~ you're right. I'm so excited for him- new organization AND promotion to AAA! Tyler worked hard to work his way up through the system. It's paying off and I wish him the best with his new team. I'm going to miss him and the Bortnick family not being Rays anymore. Hey, now you'll get to plan trips to different areas of the country. :)

  5. Anyone have any report on the player Bortnick was traded for? This trade is only clearing the way for Dietrich to be promoted to 2b in Montgomery. Best of Luck Bortnick. This is your time to shine or die out with baseball. You have a Legit shot of making the 40 man with the Diamondbacks. Don't blow it.

This is a scouting report on Tyler from the John Sickels site. I think it is very positive about a player I liked very much in the Rays system.

But, I think the Rays made a reasonable trade. Roberts is probably an upgrade over the various players who have been used to fill in for Longoria even if he is nowhere near the player he was last year. The numbers suggest he is a good fielder, and he has some pop, some speed and does not strike out all that much-a departure from many Rays hitters.

Best of luck to Tyler. He was a good pick by the Rays and I hope to see him play for Arizona in the near future.
