Tampa Bay In The Liga Paralela (Venezuela)

Tampa Bay RaysJim has been keeping us up-to-date on the Venezuelan Winter League, which is made up of current and former major leaguers and upper-level minor league players. But there is another winter league in Venezuela for younger, lower-level players called the Liga Paralela. Tampa Bay has a team in the league made up of players from their Venezuelan Summer League team, GCL, the Princeton Rays, and recent international signings.

There are about two weeks left in the season, with the team currently at 13-26. Here are some stat lines for players you may have heard of (through 12/4):

Hector Guevara - .370/.461/.556 in 108 AB, 17 BB vs 9 SO, 7 errors in 30 games
Jose Colmenarez - .369/.437/.550 in 111 AB, 7 BB vs 11 SO, 7 HBP
Alejandro Segovia - .341/.414/.580 in 88 AB, 10 BB vs 8 SO
Roan Salas - .321/.310/.357 in 28 AB
Julio Cedeno - .310/.412/.586 in 58 AB, 9 BB vs 5 SO, 5 errors in 19 games
Jhonatan Quinonez - .282/.326/.423 in 78 AB, 1 BB vs 9 SO, 5 HBP

Wilking Rodriguez - 0.00 ERA in 3.2 IP over 3 relief apps, 2 SO vs 0 BB, .167 BAA
Reinaldo Lopez - 3.55 ERA in 33.0 IP over 9 G with 3 GS, 19 SO vs 2 BB, .279 BAA
Joynerd Gonzalez - 4.60 ERA in 15.2 IP over 9 relief apps, 14 SO vs 8 BB, .196 BAA
Luis Yendis - 6.23 ERA in 26.0 IP, 14 SO vs 7 BB, .330 BAA
Omar Bencomo - 6.75 ERA in 14.2 IP over 7 G with 1 GS, 11 SO vs 0 BB, .349 BAA

We'll to a complete wrap-up once the season ends. For some highlights from the 2008 team click here.

[Edit to add per question in the Comments]: Guevara has played a total of 6 innings at shortstop all season. It was for 3 innings each in 2 games, both very early in the season. So not only has he struggled in the field, but at 2B instead of SS. All of his errors were committed at 2B.

Breakdown of Guevara's 30 games:

25 games at 2B only
2 games at DH only
1 game as a PH and then at 2B
1 game at SS only (for 3 innings)
1 game at SS (for 3 innings) and then at 2B (for 6 innings)

  1. So this league is about the level of a rookie league right? And do you know what the league avg is in hitting right now?

  2. Below US Rookie league.

Overall it's a .269 batting average over 26343 AB's. Don't have OBP and SLG. ERA is 4.22 over 6842.2 IP.

By W-L, the Rays are in 16th out of 18 teams. Hope this helps.

  3. Guevara eventually has a chance to be an outstanding player for us.

Good question, I'll edit the post to add this. Any others?

  6. does W-Rod's 3 relief appearences mean that they might look to make him a reliver or is it just a way to limit innings but still get him some time pitching?

  7. Pretty sure it's the latter. At this point there wouldn't be any reason to move him and reduce his upside potential. He's so young (19) and only averaged 4.1 IP in his 13 starts at Princeton, so I think this is just to get him some work/experience over the winter. Assuming he comes back healthy, I'd expect to see him in Hudson Valley's rotation next June.

  8. I have a question. Is Guevara with the Rays? Like will he go through the minors and all?

  9. Yeah, Hector Guevara was signed by Tampa Bay in the summer of 2008(I believe) so he's the Rays "property". Considering how well he hit in the summer(and in this winter league), I wouldn't be surprised to see him come stateside for 2010 and play for the GCL Rays.
