  1. I haven't seen this asked here lately, but have seen it elsewhere. When you do not want to keep a Rule 5 pick on your big league roster (25 man), Rule 6 of the Major League Rules governs.

In order to send him to a minor league affiliate you have to first do 3 things:

    1. Give him a 15 day tryout, in this case in spring training. That was done with Cabral.

    2. Put him on MLB waivers and have him clear. The Rays did this with Cabral and the Blue Jays claimed him. If no one did claim him then...

    3. Offer him back to his original club for 1/2 the draft price. If they don't want him then you can send him to the minors.

This only applies to players chosen in the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Players taken in the the minor league phases of the the Rule 5 draft (like Heath Rollins and Roan Salas) can be assigned to any minor league affiliate without going through the above steps.

  3. Yup, they reclaimed him. Very weird situation. Rule 5 rules still apply.

  4. MLB Trade Rumors has a little more background information on why Cabral was sent back to Tampa Bay so quickly. Apparently there was a no-contest agreement between the Blue Jays and Red Sox which kept the new Jays Manager (former Sox coach) from selecting a Sox player in the Rule 5 Draft. You can read about it here: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/handshake-agreement-may-have-impacted-cabral.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29
