Toledo Mud Hens 4, Durham Bulls 3 
The Bulls lost their third straight game to the Mud Hens on Sunday. Rich Thompson was 2 for 4 with a double. Henry Wrigley had a double. Stephen Vogt and Brooks Conrad each had an RBI. Chris Archer suffered the loss.



Montgomery Biscuits 5, Jackson Generals 2
The Biscuits closed out the series against the Generals with a win on Sunday. Kyeong Kang was 3 for 4 with a double. Shawn O’Malley was 3 for 5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Omar Luna was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Mikie Mahtook had a two run homer. Mark Thomas had a triple. Nick Barnese recorded the win and Kirby Yates the save.


Jupiter Hammerheads 4, Charlotte Stone Crabs 3 (Game One) 
The Stone Crabs late rally fell short as they lost game one of the doubleheader. Steven Tinoco was a perfect 4 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Robby Price was 2 for 3. Todd Glaesmann had a double. Cody Rogers and Kevin Kiermaier each had an RBI. Alex Koronis was charged with the loss.


Jupiter Hammerheads 6, Charlotte Stone Crabs 1 (Game Two) 
The Stone Crabs could not overcome a five run second inning by the Hammerheads as they were swept in Sunday’s doubleheader. Robby Price had a triple. Todd Glaesmann had a double and an RBI. Eliazer Suero was the losing pitcher. George Jensen pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

 

West Michigan White Caps 3, Bowling Green Hot Rods 2
The Hot Rods fell a run short as they lost to West Michigan on Sunday. Kes Carter was 2 for 4. Ryan Brett had a solo home run. Jeff Malm struck his 31st double of the season. Felipe Rivero was charged with the loss. Roberto Gomez pitched 3 scoreless innings while Shay Crawford provided 2 no-hit innings to round out the evening.

 

Lowell Spinners 5, Hudson Valley Renegades 2
 The Renegades were swept by the Spinners following Sunday’s loss. Jake DePew was the only Renegade with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Justin O’Conner also had an RBI. Sean Bierman was the losing pitcher for Hudson Valley.


 Princeton Rays 1, Greeneville Astros 0 The P-Rays were on the winning side of a 1-0 shut-out on Sunday. John Alexander was 2 for 3. Omar Narvaez drove home William Argo for the game’s only run. Bruedlin Suero, Jonathan Weaver, Alex Keudell and Nick Sawyer combined for the complete game shut=out with Suero notching the victory and Sawyer the save.

The Bulls dropped the completion of Friday’s suspended game. Tim Beckham was 2 for 5 with a run scored. Jesus Feliciano and Reid Brignac each had a double. Leslie Anderson and Cole Figeroa drove home the runs. Cesar Ramos was charged with the loss.

The Bulls dropped an early lead to lose game two of the doubleheader. Will Rhymes had a two run homer. Chris Gimenez had a double. Adam Liberatore suffered the loss.


Montgomery Biscuits 4, Jackson Generals 3
The Biscuits took advantage of being the home team as they earned a walk-off win over the Generals. Mayo Acosta had a double and 2 RBI’s. Brett Nommensen drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Chris Rearick picked up the win. Hak-Ju Lee was pulled in the third after suffering pain in the ribs.


Charlotte Stone Crabs 2, Jupiter Hammerheads 1 (Game One, 13 innings)
The Stone Crabs earned a 13 inning win over the Hammerheads on Saturday night. Robby Price was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Todd Glaesmann was 2 for 4 with a homer. Cody Rogers had an RBI single in the 13th inning to win the game. Victor Mateo pitched 8 strong innings allowing just one run and striking out 5. The bullpen combination of TJ Geith, Lenny Linsky and Chris Andujar went the rest of the way with Andujar picking up the win.


Charlotte Stone Crabs, Jupiter Hammerheads (Game Two, Postponed) 
Another rain storm came through prior to the start of Satuday’s doubleheader so the decision was made to move game two to Sunday. Sunday will now be a doubleheader with the first game beginning at 4:05.

 
Bowling Green Hot Rods 2, West Michigan White Caps 1 (15 innings) 
It took 15 innings to accomplish, but the Hot Rods opened the series with a win over the White Caps. Every hitter in the lineup reached base atleast once with five hitters recording multiple hits. Ryan Brett and Josh Sale each had a double. Taylor Motter and Jeff Malm drove home a run. The Hot Rods pitching staff combined for 16 strikeouts. Justin Woodall had the ball when the winning run was scored, earning his second win of the season.


Lowell Spinners 6, Hudson Valley Renegades 5 (13 innings)
The Renegades lost a heartbreaker in 13 innings Saturday night. Every Renegade reach base on the night. Leonardo Reginatto had 3 hits and a double. Richie Shaffer had a home run. Ryan Dunn had a double. Brandon Henderson was charged with the loss.


Greeneville Astros 6, Princeton Rays 5 
The P-Rays ninth inning rally fell short as they lost a close game to the Astros. Brandon Martin was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Omar Narvaez had a double and 3 RBI’s. Oscar Hernandez had a double. Ariel Soriano had 3 stolen bases. Jake Faria was the losing pitcher for the Rays.



GCL Rays 4, GCL Orioles 1
The GCL Rays finished the week with a win as they won a rain shortened game against the Orioles. Miguel Beltran was a perfect 2 for 2 with an RBI. Taylor Hawkins had a double and 2 RBI’s. Alex Torres pitched 3 shut-out innings with 6 strikeouts. Luis Cabrera picked up the win.


DSL Royals 17, DSL Rays 3
The DSL Rays suffered a huge defeat at the hands of the Royals. Ismael Aguero was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Joel Jumes also had a double. Bill Puljos had the other RBI. The DSL pitcher gave up 15 hits and 10 walks with Christopher Crisostomo suffering the loss.

With the season quickly passing by I thought it would be a good time to update the prospect eligibility list. We use the same playing time cutoffs for prospect status as Baseball America:

Minor Moves: Crawford, Scott

Renegades reliever Shay Crawford has been promoted to the Bowling Green Hot Rods this morning. Crawford is 1-0 with a 2.76 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 14 games this season. He is second on the team in saves with three.

Crawford is in his second season with the Rays organization. He was signed in the 41st round of the 2011 draft out of Lee University.

Also in transaction news, Luke Scott joined the Stone Crabs for his MLB rehab assignment beginning yesterday. Scott who has been on the DL since July 21 with an oblique strain is expected to be with the Stone Crabs for the weekend and possibly make a return to Tampa Bay for their trip to Seattle.

[Added by Doug]: LHP Alex Torres has been assigned to the GCL Rays roster on a rehab assignment from the Durham Bulls DL. He threw 3.0 scoreless innings against the GCL Orioles today, striking out 6 of 11 batters faced and only allowing 2 singles and no walks.

The corresponding move for Bowling Green: RHP Jason McEachern has been placed on the 7-day disabled list.

Durham Bulls 1, Toledo Mud Hens 1 (Suspended) 
After a two hour rain delay, Friday night’s series opener against the Mud Hens was suspended. The game was stopped with a 1-1 tied in the fourth inning. The game will resume on Saturday with the Mud Hens batting and the bases loaded with two outs.



Jackson Generals 4, Montgomery Biscuits 2 
The Biscuits put the tying run on base in ninth but were unable to push across the runs as they fell to the Generals. Ty Morrison was 2 for 4 with a triple. Kyeong Kang was 2 for 4. Mikie Mahtook had a solo home run. Derek Dietrich and Omar Luna each had a double. CJ Riefenhauser suffered the loss, striking out 8 hitters in 4 1/3 innings. Shane Dyer and Marquis Fleming provided 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.


Charlotte Stone Crabs, Jupiter Hammerheads (Postponed) 
Friday’s series opener between the Stone Crabs and the Hammerheads was postponed due to storms in the area of Charlotte Sports Park. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.


South Bend Silver Hawks 2, Bowling Green Hot Rods 1 
The Hot Rods surrendered a run in the ninth to suffer a narrow defeat to the Silver Hawks. Kes Carter was 2 for 2 with a double, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases. Jeff Malm was 2 for 4 with a double. Jake Hager had a triple. Charlie Cononie suffered the loss.


Lowell Spinners 9, Hudson Valley Renegades 5 
The Hot Rods watched their six game winning streak come to an end with a 9-5 loss to the Spinners. Luke Maile was 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBI’s. Mike Williams was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Ryan Dunn had a double and an RBI. Eduar Quinonez suffered the loss.


Greeneville Astros 5, Princeton Rays 0
The P-Rays struggled offensively as they were shut-out for the second consecutive night, this time at the hands of the Astros. The P-Rays had just one hit in the game, a triple by Andrew Toales. Kevin Brandt was the losing pitcher for the P-Rays.


GCL Orioles 6, GCL Rays 1 
The GCL Rays watched an early one run lead disappear as they lost to the GCL Orioles in a rare GCL night game. Jiminson Natera had the only extra base hit for the Rays, a triple in the second inning. Geisel De La Cruz was charged with the loss for the GCL Rays.


DSL Rays 11, DSL Royals 2
The DSL Rays offense provided 17 hits in the game to help score 11 runs in a big win over the Royals. Julio Herrera was a perfect 5 for 5. Cristian Toribio was 3 for 6 with a triple and 2 RBI’s. Elias Torres was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Ismael Aguero had a double and an RBI. Ruben Parades was the winning pitcher for the Rays.

Durham Bulls 12, Columbus Clippers 2
The Bulls found themselves on the winning side of a 12-2 slugfest against the Clippers. Every Bull in the lineup had atleast one hit and the game saw a combined 6 home runs, 4 of them by the Bulls. Chris Gimenez had two home runs himself, driving home 5 runs on the night. Henry Wrigley and Brooks Conrad also went deep for the Bulls. Rich Thompson and Nevin Ashley each had a triple. Matt Torra picked up the win for the Bulls.



Montgomery Biscuits 6, Jackson Generals 4 For the second night in a row, the Biscuits rallied late to beat the Generals. Mikie Mahtook led the charge, going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Omar Luna was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Shawn O’Malley also had a double. Mark Thomas delivered a solo homer in the seventh inning. Kirby Yates struck out 5 hitters in 1 2/3 innings to pick up the win.


Charlotte Stone Crabs 3, Bradenton Marauders 0 The Stone Crabs shut-out the Marauders in a rain-shortened game. Riccio Torrez was 2 for 2 with a double and a two run homer. Kevin Kiermaier had a triple. Enny Romero was dominate on the mound allowing just one hit in 6 innings while striking out 9 hitters.

 
Bowling Green Hot Rods 10, South Bend Silver Hawks 2
Every Hot Rod hitter contributed to Thursday night’s 10-2 win over the Silver Hawks. Ryan Brett led the way by going 3 for 5 from the lead-off spot. Drew Vettleson had a triple and 2 RBI’s. Alejandro Segovia and Jeff Malm had a double. Juniel Querecuto drove home three runs. Trevor Shull was the game winner. Jake Partridge provided 3 scoreless innings of relief.


Hudson Valley Renegades 5, Vermont Lake Monsters 4 (10 innings) 
The Renegades won in extra innings to sweep the Monsters for their second consecutive series sweep. Justin O’Conner was the hero of the night, going 2 for 5 with a double and knocking home the winning run in the tenth inning. Mike Williams was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Charles Epperson had a triple. All-Star Jeff Ames pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings but it was Ryan Garton who got the win.

 

Bluefield Blue Jays 3, Princeton Rays 0
The P-Rays were blanked by the Blue Jays 3-0. The Ray combined for six hits on the night, all singles. Brandon Martin was the only player with multiple hits, going 2 for 4. Alex Keudell suffered the loss, striking out 9 in 6 innings. Randy Davis pitched 3 scoreless innings.


GCL Rays 7, GCL Red Sox 6
The GCL Rays held off a late game surge by the GCL Red Sox to pull off a narrow one run victory. The top four hitters in the lineup were responsible for 9 of the Rays 11 hits, including three triples. Johnny Eierman led the way going 3 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI’s. Bralin Jackson, SPencer Edwards and Jiminson Natera each had two hits with Edwards and Natera hitting a triple. Natera also had two stolen bases on the afternoon. Matt Ramsey picked up the with and Jason Wilson the save.


DSL Cardinals 4, DSL Rays 0 
The DSL Rays were shut-out in the first game of the doubleheader. They managed just four hits in the game. Ismael Aguero was the only one with an extra base hit, a double. Jose Alonzo took the loss and is 1-5 on the season.


DSL Rays 9, DSL Cardinals 8 (12 innings) 
The DSL Rays won a hard fought 12 inning game to earn a split of Thursday’s doubleheader. Alexander Simon was 4 for 6 with 2 RBI’s. Roberto Adolfo was 2 for 6 with a home run. Cristian Toribio was 2 for 6 with a double and an RBI. Jose Rojas was 2 for 4 with a double. Elias Torres had a home run. Eddy Castillo picked up the win.

Rays In The Arizona Fall League

The organizational assignments for the Arizona Fall League have been announced and the Rays will be sending players to the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Other orgs who will contribute players to the Desert Dogs include the Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, and Florida Marlins. The last time the Rays sent players to the Desert Dogs was in 2009.

As in past seasons the league will consist of six teams in two divisions, with orgs assigned as follows for 2012:

East Division
Mesa Solar Sox: Astros, Cubs, Dodgers, Orioles, Tigers.
Salt River Rafters: Blue Jays, D-backs, Nationals, Rockies, White Sox.
Scottsdale Scorpions: Angels, Giants, Indians, Pirates, Yankees.

West Division
Peoria Javelinas: Mariners, Padres, Phillies, Reds, Twins.
Phoenix Desert Dogs: Athletics, Braves, Brewers, Marlins, Rays.

Season schedule: Opening day for the league’s 20th anniversary season is Tuesday, October 9th. The Rising Stars game is scheduled for Saturday, November 3rd at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. The league championship game will be Saturday, November 17th at Scottsdale Stadium.

Weekly schedule: The league plays Monday through Saturday at six Maricopa County spring training stadiums during the six weeks prior to Thanksgiving.

Game times: 12:35 p.m. and 6:35 p.m. local time.

Rosters:

- Initial rosters are announced around September 1st, some years it's been a few days earlier.

- Final rosters come out right before the season begins.

- Roster size is 30 players per team.

- Each MLB organization is required to provide six players.

- All AAA and AA players are eligible if they were on at least a AA roster by August 1st.

- One player below the AA level is allowed per MLB org.

- One foreign player per org is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter league.

- No players with more than one year of credited Major League service as of August 31st are eligible, except an org may select one player picked in the most recently concluded Major League Rule 5 Draft.

- Players on a minor league disabled list must be activated at least 45 days before the conclusion of their respective seasons.

Colome and Wrigley Named Rays Minor League Players of the Month for July

The Rays have named Alex Colome and Henry Wrigley as the players of the month for July.

Colome was 5-1 in July with 36 strikeouts and 2.23 ERA in 6 starts, including his first career complete came on July 29 against Mississippi. Colome is now 8-3 with a 3.31 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 16 games split between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham. He was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week to close out July prior to being promoted to Durham.

Wrigley continues to lead the Rays organization in offensive production, leading the organization in home runs and RBI’s while ranked third in the organization in batting average. He hit .370 for the month of July with 10 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs and 18 RBI’s. Wrigley is now hitting .305 with 34 doubles, a triple, 17 home runs and 73 RBI’s in 105 games split between Montgomery and Durham.

Wrigley’s performance in July also led him to being named the Topps International League Player of the Month for July.

Columbus Clippers 3, Durham Bulls 0
The Bulls managed six hits on the night but couldn’t turn them into runs as they were shut-out by the Clippers. Tim Beckham was the only Bull with multiple hits going 2 for 3. Will Rhymes had a triple. All three runs were charged to Alex Colome who suffered the loss. Ryan Reid and Jim Paduch were both scoreless from the bullpen.

Bradenton Marauders 2, Charlotte Stone Crabs 1 (11 innings)
 The Stone Crabs lost in extra innings to the Marauders. All but one hitter in the Stone Crabs lineup reached base on the night. Riccio Torrez had a double and a triple. Robi Estrada doubled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Phil Wunderlich also doubled. Jeff Niemann pitched 2 2/3 innings to start in an MLB rehab apperance. Braulio Lara followed with 4 1/3 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts. Matt Nevarez surrendered his first run since joining the Stone Crabs but it proved to be the game winner as he was charged with the loss.


South Bend Silver Hawks 6, Bowling Green Hot Rods 4 
The Hot Rods late rally wasn’t enough to overcome an early deficit as they lost 6-4. Jeff Malm drove home all four Hot Rods runs by goinf 2 for 4 with a double and 4 RBI’s. Drew Vettleson had a triple and 3 walks. Ryan Brett had a double and 2 stolen bases. Ryan Carpenter suffered the loss for the Hot Rods.


Hudson Valley Renegades 2, Vermont Lake Monsters 0
The Renegades shut-out Vermont to win their fifth straight game. Richie Shaffer drove home both runs by going 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Taylor Guerrieri picked up his first professional win by throwing 5 scoreless innings. Ian Kendall and Shay Crawford chipped in to take the shut-out through nine innings with Crawford recording his third save of the season.


Princeton Rays 4, Bluefield Blue Jays 3 (13 innings) 
For the second consecutive night, the P-Rays squeezed out a narrow 4-3 win over neighboring Bluefield, but this time it took 13 innings to determine a winner. Brandon Martin, Ariel Soriano, Oscar Hernandez and John Alexander all had multiple hit nights. Martin and Hernandez each had a solo homer. Alexander had a double. The winning run came when Martin scored on a throwing error in the 13th inning. The bullpen was flawless as they provided 10 innings of scoreless relief. Eli Echarry threw 5 scoreless innings. Nick Sawyer had 4 no-hit innings with 8 strikeouts. Pedro Silvestre was the winner with a no-hit inning of work.

 


GCL Red Sox 3, GCL Rays 0 
The GCL Rays managed just three hits, all singles, as they were shut-out 3-0 against the GCL Red Sox. Isaias Velasquez, Leopoldo Correa and Wilmer Dominguez each had a double. Armando Araiza drew 3 walks. Nolan Gannon suffered the loss and is now 1-1 on the season.

It has mostly been a disastrous week for the Rays minor league affiliates. Especially Montgomery and the Charlotte-based teams have not seen many wins since last Friday. Especially an overall slip of the offensive production has been the reason for the negative records of those three affiliates.

OPS-CH and ERA-CH stands for the OPS and ERA change since the last minor league breakdown.

Prospects stats overview

This time I'm going to focus a bit on walk rates. While I don't think that Derek Shelton's approach works (who does?), high walk rates are a positive. At least since Moneyball, lots of Baseball fans know that. What is imperative, though, is that the walk rate shouldn't come at the cost of the batting average and high strikeouts (... Mr. Shelton). Therefore, I'm going to look at the 5 leaders in BB% (min. 100 PA's) today, by also pointing out their K% and batting average. Putting the BB% into perspective, an 8.5 BB% is about league average (the Rays minor leaguers exactly have an 8.5 BB% as well). A BB% of 12/13 or higher is very good and of 5/6 or lower is not very good.

1. Joshua Sale (BG) ... 18 BB% (.270 AVG, 20.6 K%) ... has to be careful, not to become a power hitter with an AVG too low and a K% too high. Don't become too patient!!!
2. Tommy Coyle (HDV) ... 15.7 % (.294 AVG, 15.7 K%) ... peripherals look solid
3. Kevin Kiermaier (CHA/GCL) ... 13.6 % (.281 AVG, 16.5 K%) ... see above
4. Brad Coon (MON) ... 13.5 % (.230 AVG, 17.8 K%) ... the AVG is a bit low
5. Luke Maile (HDV) ... 13.3 % (.291 AVG, 14.5 K%) ... everything looks solid.

Kes Carter (92 PA, 15.2 BB%, 25.0 K%, .271 AVG) and Deshun Dixon (147 PA, 10.9 BB%, 29.3 K%, .209 AVG) are examples for players with a high walk rate, but also a (very) high strikeout rate while Douglas Duran (91 PA, 14.3 BB%, 24.2 K%, .189 AVG) and James Harris Jr. (137 PA, 10.2 BB%, 21.9 K%, .183 AVG) are examples of a fairly high walk rate with, both, a low AVG and a high K%.

The trailors (again min. 100 PA's) in the BB% category are:

Here is the data (the horizontal black line shows you where the average Rays MiL hitter would be ... sorted by wOBA). The offensive output of the system has decreased as a whole over the last two weeks. The average OPS/wOBA fell from .722/.334 to .714/.331.

The following lists are no prospect rankings. They just show which players have been hot/cold and/or show positive/negative trends over the last 2-4 weeks.

Prospects on the rise

1. Alejandro Segovia ... I can't keep him off this list! He draws more walks than he strikes out. He shows the most power in the system (according to ISO), ahead of Andrew Toles. He nearly hits .300, has an OBP north of .400 and an OPS of 1. 
2. Mark Thomas ... The 2nd catcher on this list. While it's only 31 PA's, he has hit to a wOBA of .482 and to an 1.099 OPS. 
3. Andrew Toles ... He continues to shine, while even having a BABIP below .300 (which is an indicator for bad luck ... especially as he is fast on the basepaths) over his last 55 PA's.
4. Tommy Coyle ... Another repeater on this list, and rightfully so. His last 113 PA's: .946 OPS / .448 wOBA
5. Robi Estrada ... He is one of the only Stone Crabs' hitters with solid results over the last 2 weeks.

Honorable mentions: Justin O'Conner (solid last 2 weeks, bad before), Yoel Araujo, Benjamin Kline, Rich Thompson, Chris Gimenez, Cole Figueroa, Daryl George, Todd Glaesmann, Leopoldo Correa.

Prospects to be falling

1. Henry Wrigley ... His seasonal numbers are still very remarkable, despite his recent cold streak (45 PA, .554 OPS, .246 wOBA).
2. John Alexander ... Not a good first season for the first baseman. An AVG below .200, nearly no walks and only a .547 OPS.
3. James Harris Jr. and Spencer Edwars ... Both have decent speed, but an AVG below .185, paired with limited power won't do it.
4. Brandon Martin ... The 1st (supp) round pick from last year has been nothing but a disappointment so far, especially comparing him to Jake Hager who plays 2 levels above and is able to hold his own at the plate.
5. Ryan Brett ... A very cold July (.567 OPS) is followed by a very cold start of August (.544 OPS).

Six Renegades Named to NYP All-Star Team

The Hudson Valley Renegades are well represented in the 2012 New York-Penn League All-Star Game as five six Renegades have been selected for the event. Jeff Ames, Thomas Coyle, Taylor Guerrieri, Jose Molina Leonardo Reginatto and Joey Rickard will make the trip to Ohio to represent the American League.

Ames is a perfect 3-0 on the season with a 1.85 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 9 starts this season. Ames is in his second season in the Rays organization as he was drafted by the Rays in the first round of the 2011 draft out of Lower Columbia College.

Coyle leads the Renegades hitters this season with a .294 average. He has 10 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 22 RBI’s in 45 games this season. Coyle was drafted by the Rays in the 16th round of the 2012 draft out of UNC. 

Joining Ames on the mound will be another dominate Renegades pitcher in Guerrieri. Guerrieri has yet to record his first professional win but has a 1.24 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 7 starts this season. He is in his first season in the Rays organization after being selected in the first round of the 2011 draft out if Spring Valley (SC) High School.

Molina was added to the all-star roster after the league released the all-star teams.  Molina is 2-1 with a 1.25 ERA for the Renegades this season.  He is in his fifth season with the organization after being signed as an international free agent.

Reginatto makes the all-star team in his second season with the Renegades. He is hitting .289 with 6 doubles and 20 RBI’s in 44 games this season. Reginatto was signed as an international free agent in 2009.

Rounding out the Renegades All-Star is Rickard. While Rickard doesn’t have enough at-bats to qualify for the official team lead, he currently has the highest average on the club. He is hitting .323 with 7 doubles, a home run and 5 RBI’s in 24 games. Rickard was drafted by the Rays in the ninth round of this year’s draft out of the University of Arizona.

The 2012 New York-Penn League All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Eastwood Field, home of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

Tuesday Moves

Isaias Velasquez

First a couple from Monday:

The Tampa Bay Rays optioned infielder Will Rhymes to the Durham Bulls. This was to make room on the 25-man roster for Evan Longoria.

Outfielder Isaias Velasquez was sent to the GCL Rays on a rehab assignment. He had been on the Montgomery Biscuits 7-day disabled list since mid-April when he was hit in the face with a flyball. He was 0-3 with a strikeout on Monday and didn't play today.

Now for Tuesday:

The Tampa Bay Rays activated 3B Evan Longoria from the 60-day disabled list after his rehab stint with the Durham Bulls.

The Rays haven't announced it yet, but they have to make another move to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Longoria. Luke Scott is the only player on the 15-day DL who could be moved to the 60-day to open a spot. But it sounds like Scott is nearly ready to return from his right oblique injury, so that won't do it. That means someone will have to be removed by trade, release, or DFA.

Jeff Niemann is scheduled to make his first rehab start for the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Wednesday vs. the Bradenton Marauders. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Charlotte Sports Park, and RH Kenn Kasparek (0-4, 5.30 ERA) will start for Bradenton. Niemann will be taking LH Braulio Lara's spot in the Stone Crabs rotation.

The Rays have announced that infielder Brooks Conrad has been DFA'd from the Durham Bulls to make room for Longoria on the 40-man roster.

Prospects on the rise

1. Kevin Brandt ... Driven by a mind-blowing performance on the 20th of July (4 IP, 9 K), he has been excellent as of late. Keep in mind that he is a bit old for rookie-ball, though.
2. Frank De los Santos ... He is excellent since his promotion to Durham: 19 IP, 1.40 ERA, 8.84 K/9, 1.4 BB/9, 2.01 FIP.
3. Jesse Hahn ... The long anticipated pro-debut of '10 draftee Jesse Hahn has been better than expected. If you cross out the one really bad outing he had (June 24th), his stat line looks as follows: 23 IP, 18 H, 6 ER (2.35 ERA), 8 BB, 22 K.
4. Dylan Floro ... The pitching staff is the main reason for the excellent season the Renegades have and Floro is a big part of it. Last 12.2 IP: 2.25 FIP, 6.4 K/9, 1.4 BB/9.
5. Jeff Ames ... Even more Renegades pitching: 19 IP, 2.59 FIP, 8.8 K/9, 1.5 BB/9 in his last 4 starts. 29 IP, 2.61 FIP on the season.
6. Alex Keudell ... Like Kevin Brandt, he is a bit old for Princeton, but dominating. His last 9 IP: 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K.
7. Alex Colome ... He received his well deserved promotion to AAA. His last 5 starts in AA may have helped with that: 35.1 IP, 1.27 ERA, 2.98 FIP, 8.4 K/9, 3.8 BB/9.
8. Nolan Gannon ... After 14 IP, he still has to give up an earned run. The strikeout-rate could be higher, though. Nevertheless, an encouraging start to his pro career. 
9. Parker Markel ... His last 3 starts: 18.1 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 17 K. The strikeouts are coming around.
10. Dane De la Rosa ... The hottest pitcher in the Bulls pen: The last 6.1 IP: 3 H, 4 BB, 12 K.

Prospects to be falling

1. Matt Spann ... Since the 5th of July: 24 IP, 5.25 ERA, 4.78 FIP and only 2.2 K/9!
2. Romulo Sanchez ... He is falling way down on the reliever depth chart with a FIP and ERA higher than 10 (!!) over his last 9.2 IP. The strikeout-rate is very alarming, too, with only 3.7 K/9.
3. C.J. Riefenhauser ... I'm very surprised by his promotion to AA. I could see it going along with a permanent move to the pen. He has been way too hitable in July (last 32.2 IP, 46 H !!)
4. Enny Romero ... I repeat my comment from two weeks ago: "Is he ever going to find the strike-zone?"
5. Charlie Cononie ... See Enny Romero.
6. Alex Torres ... See Charlie Cononie. 
7. Albert Suarez ... He is back to not striking anybody out. 2.7 K/9 over his last 26.1 IP. The FIP was unimpressive as well: 5.22 FIP.

Wednesday Moves

Alex Colome

RHSP Alex Colome has been promoted to the Durham Bulls from the Montgomery Biscuits.

LHSP C.J. Riefenhauser has been promoted to the Montgomery Biscuits from the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

Here is part of the release from Montgomery:

Colome, a 40-man roster member, had been dominant for the Biscuits, with Montgomery winning 11 of his 14 starts. Over Colome's last five starts, he was 5-0 with a 1.27. It will be his triple-A debut. Riefenhauser, 22, was 7-8 with a 4.76 mainly as a starter for the Stone Crabs. After going 6-2 with a 2.98 in the first half, he was 1-6 with a 7.38 in 8 second-half appearances.

The Tampa Bay Rays optioned RHRP Josh Lueke back to the Durham Bulls.

The Bulls roster is now one over the limit at 26 (plus Longoria, who doesn't count). They also will need to add Lueke, who has three days to report from the Rays. Lueke should be cancelled out by another call-up by the Rays, probably a position player. But the Bulls will need to open one additional spot in the next couple of days.

The Biscuits roster is at a full 25. The Stone Crabs are one short at 24.

In 2009 the Rays selected 50 players over 50 rounds, signed 32 of those picks, and have 15 players left in the system three years later.

The 'LeVon Washington draft' has become the 'Todd Glaesmann draft', and other than Glaesmann, Malm and some relievers, there isn't much to show for it. And that's the optimistic outlook. Glaesmann seems to have turned it up a couple of notches since playing winter ball in Australia, and he's always been a strong defender. But this is his first good year, and the strikeout and walk rates are still worrisome. Malm has hit well so far, but as a 1B his bat will have to carry him. He did play 17 games earlier this year in the outfield, mostly in left, with a .933 fielding percentage. If he can play a reasonable left field his chances of making it improve quite a bit. Glaesmann is 2nd in the Rays organization this season with 181 total bases and Malm is 5th with 162. They are tied with an .815 OPS, good for 9th in the org among qualifiers. Relievers are relievers, a couple will probably reach the majors, but who knows which ones at this point.

The funny part is the draft wouldn't have been any better if Washington, Diekroeger and Dennis had signed. Washington has been a major disappointment in the Indians org, Diekroeger wasn't great at Stanford and dropped to the 4th round in the 2012 draft, and Dennis was awful at Michigan. You can still make a case for Diekroeger, but I want to see him do something above the Appy league.

Any thoughts on this draft, or things I'm missing?
