Former P-Rays Catcher Joins 2011 P-Rays Coaching Staff

Press Release Provided by P-Rays General Manager Jim Holland.

Former Princeton Rays’ player Josh Arhart will be returning to Princeton this summer after being hired by the Tampa Bay Rays as an additional coach for the 2011 P-Rays’ on-field staff.

Arhart, 31, will be assisting 2011 P-Rays’ hitting coach Wuarnner Rincones with hitting instruction as well as working with the team’s catchers.

The Santa Ana, CA native was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Rays on June 14, 2002 after hitting .363 with 37 RBI in his senior season at UCLA. He then made his playing debut as a professional as a catcher/first baseman on the 2002 edition of the P-Rays. It was a successful entry as he hit .300 (60-200) with four homers and 31 RBI in 55 games for the 2002 Princeton squad. Arhart then played five additional seasons in the Rays’ farm system (including a three-game rehab appearance in Princeton in 2007) and finished his Rays’ tenure as a .277 career hitter in 473 games with 39 homers and 245 RBI. He then finished his playing career by playing in the independent leagues for three years. His time as a player concluded on a high note in 2010, when he hit a sizzling .352 with 17 homers and 55 RBI in 72 games for the Victoria Seals of the Golden League.

Arhart becomes the third former Princeton player to return here as a coach, joining 1997 P-Ray Jared Sandberg and 2000 P-Ray Dan DeMent, who were the manager and hitting coach respectively for the 2009 Princeton Rays.

“Josh was certainly a fan favorite when he was here previously and was a steady player who demonstrated even then a lot of the qualities that teams look for in future coaching prospects. It didn’t really surprise me to learn he would be joining us in 2011,” commented P-Rays’ General Manager Jim Holland while making the April 17 announcement.

Torres Named International League Pitcher of the Week

Alex Torres was named the International League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on April 17. Torres made two starts during the period and was 1-0 and allowed no runs on 5 hits with 17 strikeouts and 2 walks in 10 1/3 innings. Opposing hitters are hitting .139 against Torres so far this season.

Torres was acquired by the Rays organization in 2009 as part of the Scott Kazmir trade to the Angels. He was originally signed by the Angels as a free agent in 2005. Torres is a two time all-star and appeared in the MLB Futures Game in 2010. This is his third Pitcher of the Week award, winning in 2009 in the California League and again in 2010 in the Southern League.

Minor Moves: Newmann, Matulia, Wrigley

LHP David Newmann of the Montgomery Biscuits has retired. The 25 year-old lefthander was drafted by the Rays in the 4th round (125th overall) of the 2007 draft out of Texas A&M and signed for a $250,000 bonus.

After missing 2008 with a knee injury, he had an impressive professional debut for Charlotte in 2009 (3.44 ERA in 24 starts, 8.8 SO/9), but regressed against AA batters at Montgomery in 2010 (4.50 ERA in 23 starts, 6.3 SO/9). Newmann began the 2011 season back at Montgomery, this time in a relief role. In three appearances for the Biscuits he pitched a total of 4.2 innings with a 9.64 ERA.

The Montgomery Biscuits have activated outfielder John Matulia and infielder Henry Wrigley from the 7-day disabled list.

To make room for Bencomo on the Hot Rods roster RHP George Jensen was assigned to extended spring training. Jensen had an 11.57 ERA over 2 starts, allowing 13 hits and 5 walks over 7.0 innings while only striking out 2 batters.

The Charlotte Stone Crabs have activated SS Hak-Ju Lee from the 7-Day disabled list. Lee has been recovering from chicken pox since the end of spring training.

To make room for Lee on the roster the Stone Crabs have released OF Gabe Cohen, the Rays 29th round pick in the 2009 draft. Cohen batted .293 for the Bowling Green Hot Rods last season but was only hitting .154 through 4 games this year with Charlotte.

Weekly Minor League Breakdown: The Hitting Prospects

This is the first post in a new series here over at RaysProspects.com. With this series we're going to take a deeper look in the minor league numbers and in the progress of the Rays best prospects. Every friday we're alternating going to take a look at the best Rays hitting (today) and pitching (next friday) prospects. So ... here we go.

First I’m going to list the 31 hitting prospects I’m going to follow over the year. Any wishes foradditional prospects are very welcome.

  • AAA: Lobaton, Canzler, Guyer, Jennings, Chirinos
  • AA: Mayora, Beckham, Ashley, Sweeney, Figueroa, Kang
  • A+: Nommensen, Bortnick, Lee, Morrison, Cedeno
  • A: Dietrich, Bailey, Rogers, Glaesmann, Guevara
  • XST: Sale, Vettleson, O’Conner, Brett, Araujo, DePew, Malm, Morillo, Perez, Querecuto

Overall Impressions

Before I say anything about this years’ performances you always have to keep in mind that the analysis has to be taken with a grain of salt as the sample size I’m able to look at is very small.

Nevertheless I’m going to try to read something out of the performances thus far. I want to start with the fact that the top 15 hitting prospects pre season - or lets say the 8 top 15 hitting prospects who have played in games yet - are hitting very well so far. In combined 209 PA’s they have an average batting line of .295 - .372 - .853 (AVG – OBP – OPS), good for a wOBA of .381.

Hitting prospects stats overview

(click on the image for a better view)

Obviously the stat lines so far vary way more now than they will in the following weeks. With 8 of the prospects posting wOBA’s over .400 we can at least say that these players got off to a good start. Very encouraging it is that this list of hot-start players includes some of the Rays’ top prospects, namely Desmond Jennings (#1), Brandon Guyer (#8), Luke Bailey (#9) and Derek Dietrich (#14).

As I’ve always been a great fan of Luke Bailey and Desmond Jennings I’m especially glad about their respective hot starts. While Bailey seems to have left his injury behind and is raking despite being promoted from Princeton directly to Bowling Green (with red flags being the high K-rate and the very high BABIP), Desmond Jennings makes a hard push for the 25-man roster spot currently occupied by Casey Kotchman. He shows great plate discipline (16.7 BB%, 1:1 BB:K ratio), on base skills and speed, making him even more looking like the future #1 hitter in the Rays batting order. Next to Bailey and Jennings, Russ Canzler (he also homered yesterday, which is not included in the stats), Brandon Guyer, Brett Nommensen, Daniel Mayora and the 2 guys with an OPS over 1.500 – namely Derek Dietrich and Jose Lobaton – are off to an excellent start of the season.

  • 3 prospects on the rise

1) Luke Bailey … He had the most question marks and is showing great promise and can hopefully live up to his enormous potential.

2) Jose Lobaton … Solid spring training performances and this really hot start (1.754 OPS!!!) in AAA make him the first choice to be called up if John Jaso or Kelly Shoppach get hurt.

3) Derek Dietrich … As his defense at short is a question mark his bat has to show up in order to become a big leaguer. And, what can I say, so far it’s more than showing up. He shows enormous power potential and good contact skills.

  • 3 prospects to be falling

1) Todd Glaesmann … As I said before, I’m working with very small sample sizes here, but Todd Glaesmann simply seems to be overmatched (40.9 K%) in Bowling Green. Hopefully he can turn things around and start to translate his tools into skills.

2) Robinson Chirinos … After a great showing in spring training I was even hoping that the Rays find a way to trade Kelly Shoppach. Robinson Chirinos – at least offensively – seemed more than ready. Now he seems to only be the Rays 4thcatcher in the depth chart.

3) Cody Rogers … Being older than Hot Rods teammates Bailey, Dietrich, Glaesmann, … I was hoping for Cody Rogers having a fast start to the season in order to move up to Port Charlotte. The stats, however, indicate that he is overmatched in low A (11:1 K:BB-ratio, 40.7 K%).

The prospect of the day: Derek Dietrich

  • How acquired? 2010 draft (2nd rnd)
  • Born: 07/18/89
  • Position: SS/3B
  • B/T: L/R
  • '11 MiL team: Bowling Green Hot Rods (A)

Derek Dietrich has some serious question marks going into his first full season. Can he stay in the middle infield? Can he hit enough if he has to move to 3B? Kevin analysed his situation very well in his Prospect Guide for the '11 Rays season:

Dietrich has some good tools at the plate, starting with his above average power. He posted double-digit home run totals all three seasons with the Yellow Jackets, including 17 as a junior. He isn't a plus pure hitter, and tries too often to pull the ball, but he has the potential to develop that tool into an average one. His plate patience is also only okay, and his swing can let long and lead to strikeouts, evidenced by a platinum sombrero (five strikeouts) on 8/30 with HV. In the field, Dietrich is somewhat of a tweener. His defensive actions at shortstop are good, and his arm is plenty strong for the position, but doesn't have the overall athleticism to stick there. Third base seems like the logical place or him to go, but with that position taken at the major-league level, the Rays will probably try to develop him as a middle infielder, albeit a second baseman.

So, if he has to move off of short due to a lack of athleticism he'll have to prove that he can hit for power while also showing an advanced approach at the plate and excellent contact skills. And so far Dietrich has taken his fate into his own hands and put up exceptional numbers. Though, it's been just 22 PA's (now including Thursday's data) he showed great power (ISO of .714, 6 extra base hits in 22 PA's) and contact skills. Looking at last years stats, however, his approach at the plate needs some work. He had a BB% of 5.2% while striking out 24.1% of the time.

If Dietrich can cut down on his strikeouts and draw a bit more walks he should be a fine hitter. Going forward I see him - considering all the reports I've heard - moving off of short. Then the Rays should have the first legit 3B prospect since that Longoria kid. But, as the hot corner seams to be blocked for a while I see the Rays also trying Dietrich out at 2nd base. Even if he has to move off of short, his fate is in his own hands. With steady improvements at the plate he could be a major league infielder on a daily basis. I for myself am very eager how he is doing in the future and I'll follow him closely.

Introducing myself and a new series of posts!

    Hi fellow Rays fans,

With this post I first want to introduce myself and also introduce a new series of posts I'm going to make over here at RaysProspects.com.

My name is Wolfgang Burgholzer (Burgi) and I arguably am the biggest Rays fan in Europe (I live in Vienna/Austria). Some may know me from my time over at TheRaysParty along RZ. Unfortunatly we both had way too much going on so that we had to stop blogging over there in '09. Now, as I finally have more spare time to spend, I'm going to dedicate it to one of my greatest passions: Writing about player development and player acquisition.

How did an Austrian guy end up becoming a Rays fan?
I've had an affinity for US sports for about 15 years now. It all started with the NBA (especially with the Bulls - Jazz matchups) and went on to the NFL, the NHL and finally the MLB. When my girlfriend and I have been in the states in '07 I started to love the city of Boston and looked into the Red Sox way of doing business a bit more. I immediatelly liked them much more than the Yankees as they are way smarter in what they are doing. But ... I very fast realized that it's way to easy to build a winning team with that kind of nearly unlimited resources. And as I'm always rooting for the underdog I was looking for a well-run franchise with a limited budget. And that's how I ended up becoming maybe the biggest Rays fan in Europe (so ... it was before '08! ;-) ... really no bandwagon!). The things I love most about baseball is the complexitiy of running a successful baseball team (developing talent, gathering talent, how to put your roster together, how to use matchups every day, ...), the beauty of developing talent in the minor leagues and the stats driven way of analyzing a players' performance. Thus I'm way more into acquiring and developing talent within a franchise - in order to give it a chance to compete in the long run - than in its daily business.

What am I going to do here?
In order to supplement the excellent and in depth daily content here at the website, I'm going to work on a new series which should give an in depth look at the progress the minor league prospects make. It will be a series of posts which will be published every friday and which concentrates alternatively on the hitting prospects one week and on the pitching prospects the next week. The series is going to be called Weekly MiL-breakdown: The hitting prospects (or The pitching prospects).

Within each post I'm going to analyze the systems' hitting/pitching prospects by ...
    1) ... looking at the overall hitting in the Rays MiL system.
    2) ... analyzing the top prospects (about 30 pitchers and 30 hitters) performance and progress into detail every two weeks. I'm also going to single out 3 prospects on the rise and 3 prospects on the fall.
    3) ... presenting the prospect of the week by looking into his scouting reports, numbers and development as well as his future role within the Rays.
    4) ... taking a deeper look at one particular stat by looking at the numbers of the Rays top prospects at this stat. Later today in my first MiL-breakdown I'm going to take a deeper look at BABIP.

I really hope you enjoy reading my weekly posts as much as I'm definitely going to enjoy writing them.

    Scores and Highlights from 4/13

Durham Bulls 5, Charlotte Knights 2
Jose Lobaton (4-4) and Brandon Guyer (3-4 with a walk) led the offensive charge as Dirk Hayhurst outdueled a rehabbing Jake Peavy. Lobaton upped his batting average to .625 on the year with three singles and a triple, while Guyer doubled twice off of Peavy. Russ Canzler also got in on the action with a 2-3 night including a home run and three RBIs. Hayhurst worked six strong innings, allowing a run on three hits while striking out seven and walking one. Dane De La Rosa pitched two scoreless relief innings and Rob Delaney pitched the 9th.

Tennessee Smokies 12, Montgomery Biscuits 10
Matt Moore struck out five and didn't walk a batter but coughed up six runs on ten hits in 4.1 innings (More on him below). David Newmann, Marquis Fleming, and Paul Phillips allowed six runs in 3.2 innings in relief. Offensively, the top four in the order all picked up multiple hits, including three from John Shelby and Daniel Mayora. Tim Beckham was 2-5 with a double, and Matt Sweeney drew three walks.

Moore didn't walk anyone but his control wasn't exactly sharp. He threw first-pitch strikes to just 9 of 21 hitters and worked multiple three-ball counts. He allowed two home runs, and I wonder if perhaps he had too much of the plate last night; that is, he fell behind and then had to throw strikes so he came over the middle of the plate. It's weird that 12 strikeouts and 0 walks in 9.1 innings so far for Moore is a bit a disappointment, but that shows how good a prospect he is. Tennessee came into the game with a .981 team OPS, so I just think he ran into a hot offense and didn't have the good stuff (a lot of foul balls rather than swings and misses) or control that he had on opening day.

Charlotte Stone Crabs 5, Palm Beach Cardinals 4 (10 innings)
Shelby Miller struck out eleven Crabs in 5.2 innings, but Charlotte scraped four runs out against him and Mayobanex Acosta drove in the winning run in the 10th on a sacrifice fly. Alex Colome allowed four runs in six innings, striking out four and walking three. All Charlotte starters had a hit except Acosta and Dustin Biell, but Mike Sheridan was the only with two hits. Tyler Bortnick went 1-5 with four strikeouts but is still hitting .345. Deivis Mavarez and Josh Satow combined for four scoreless relief innings.

Fort Wayne Tincaps 3, Bowling Green Hot Rods 2
Keyvius Sampson shut the Hot Rods offense down, whiffing nine in five innings. Bowling Green got two unearned runs in the eighth but couldn't complete the rally. Robby Price collected two hits, Luke Bailey added a double, and Derek Dietrich reached on a hit and walk. Kevin Kiermaier and Cody Rogers combined for eight strikeouts. Victor Mateo allowed the three runs over four innings, and Eliazer Suero pitched the final five.
