Prospect A to Z Day 7: Geisel De La Cruz

This is a new feature on the site, mainly because we're still in the doldrums of prospect season and we want to get discussion going. We'll be going through the alphabet in October and November to pick one prospect a day before our top prospect coverage starts in December. There's no real rhyme or reason to who we'll talk about, and we're open to suggestions for some letters.

A quick one today on a potential sleeper from the Dominican Summer League. Left-hander Geisel De La Cruz is listed at 6-0/139, which means he projects to be Juan Cruz or Edwar Ramirez-type skinny. He struck out more than a hitter per inning in 2011 -- 59 in 58 innings -- and walked just 16 while holding opponents to a .216 batting average. He turns 19 in April and should be in the United States for 2012.

Looking over the DSL and VSL stat pages, is there anyone (besides the obvious, Oscar Hernandez) you think can make a splash with Princeton or the GCL Rays next year?

  1. Jorge Rodriguez in the DSL? Struck out 35 and walked 8 in 36 innings. And it looks as if he was used as the closer, which might be a vote of confidence.

    Anything interesting about him?

  2. ... or Freddy Alvarez and Leopoldo Correa.

How about them. Alvarez was really, really young in '11 and looked well statistically.

  3. VSL Rays is very hitter-friendly team. Andres Gonzalez, Freddy Alvarez, Henry Centeno, Mario Fernandez are young pitcher who pitched well at the team. A.Gonzalez and F.Alavrez are the best of them.

  4. Jonathan Quinonez who is already here but started the year in VSL. Andres Gonzales who looks awesome.Ismael Arguero, Oscar Armenta and Jorge Rodriguez from the DSL.

  6. I see where BaseballAmerica listed him at 6'2" 180, but I'm not seeing a 1993 birthdate anywhere.

  7. Nevermind, found it from one source: http://dblbeisbol.com/players/player_35162.html

    I'll try to find out.

  8. BaseballAmerica international prospect guru Ben Badler says he has 12/3/93:

"I have his DOB as 12/3/93. MLBAM occasionally makes errors like that from time to time, but I'll check."

  9. Thanks for checking Kevin. I have '93 in my db, I add them when signed. Here is the official press release when signed, said 16 in July of 2010, so they were using '93 also: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20100703&content_id=11878390&vkey=pr_tb&fext=.jsp&c_id=tb

It also lists him at 6'3", but height and weight are always off, to the taller and slimmer side.

Glad to see you have power too. With BA starting their Top 10's today, have you heard if Ballew is doing the Rays again this year?

  10. Actually, just noticed that in the depth chart I was using '92, so switched back to '93. Must have pulled it from milb instead of my spreadsheet.

  11. Ballew did the Braves today so I'm sure he'll (unfortunately) do the Rays.
