Prospect A to Z Day 8: James Harris

This is a new feature on the site, mainly because we're still in the doldrums of prospect season and we want to get discussion going. We'll be going through the alphabet in October and November to pick one prospect a day before our top prospect coverage starts in December. There's no real rhyme or reason to who we'll talk about, and we're open to suggestions for some letters.

Harris was the Rays final supplemental draft pick, a raw high school outfielder from California. Here's the BaseballAmerica report on him from the draft:

Outfielder James Harris looks great in a uniform with his 6-foot-1, 175-pound athletic frame. He's raw and may need two years in Rookie ball, but he has huge upside. Harris is an explosive athlete. He is a well above-average runner, with a 37-inch vertical leap, and can fly on the bases and in center field. He has below-average arm strength, but enough for center field. A righthanded hitter, Harris is patient at the plate, trying to get on base any way possible, and some scouts wonder if he's actually too passive. He also shows some raw power. Harris has not committed to a college, so he should be signable.
Harris was also one of the youngest players in the draft, or at least the top few rounds. It's something we mentioned on the podcast relating to Rany Jazayerli's study at Baseball Prospectus, which you should check out.

Harris hit .165/.253/.203 for the GCL Rays in 45 games and should play with Princeton in 2012.

Prospect A to Z Day 7: Geisel De La Cruz

This is a new feature on the site, mainly because we're still in the doldrums of prospect season and we want to get discussion going. We'll be going through the alphabet in October and November to pick one prospect a day before our top prospect coverage starts in December. There's no real rhyme or reason to who we'll talk about, and we're open to suggestions for some letters.

A quick one today on a potential sleeper from the Dominican Summer League. Left-hander Geisel De La Cruz is listed at 6-0/139, which means he projects to be Juan Cruz or Edwar Ramirez-type skinny. He struck out more than a hitter per inning in 2011 -- 59 in 58 innings -- and walked just 16 while holding opponents to a .216 batting average. He turns 19 in April and should be in the United States for 2012.

Looking over the DSL and VSL stat pages, is there anyone (besides the obvious, Oscar Hernandez) you think can make a splash with Princeton or the GCL Rays next year?

Prospect A to Z Day 6: Cole Figueroa

This is a new feature on the site, mainly because we're still in the doldrums of prospect season and we want to get discussion going. We'll be going through the alphabet in October and November to pick one prospect a day before our top prospect coverage starts in December. There's no real rhyme or reason to who we'll talk about, and we're open to suggestions for some letters.

The upper-level middle infielders are sure to be a topic of conversation heading into next year. Tim Beckham and Hak-Ju Lee, of course, and Tyler Bortnick too. But what of the fourth, likely Durham starting 2B Cole Figueroa?

The only position player acquired from San Diego in the Jason Bartlett deal, Figueroa was coming off a .303/.408/.392 year in the hitter-friendly Cal League. Promoted to double-A for 2011, he hit .283/.375/.398 for the Biscuits. After playing primary second base in 2010, he played 58 games there in 2011 along with 36 at third base and twelve at shortstop.

His walk rate dropped from 2010, but only down to a still-impressive 11.3%. His strikeout rate also fell with just 41 in 488 plate appearances (8.4%). His IsoP was .115, a .026 improvement from the Cal League and his highest since 2008 in his pro debut.

Range is a more important measure of defense, but Figueroa appears extremely sure-handed with a .983 career fielding percentage (though baseball-reference notes minor league fielding numbers are incomplete). For reference, Tyler Bortnick's career mark is .969. Figueroa doesn't steal bases like Bortnick, but he did swipe 26 in 2010 (just nine in 2011).

Given the range of positions he played, it seems the Rays are prepping him as a potential utility infielder. What do you think of his potential?

Prospect A to Z Day 5: Enny Romero

[Note: Bumping this back up. Cole Figueroa coming on Wednesday -Kevin]

Together with this years' top pick Taylor Guerrieri, Enny Romero has the highest ceiling of any Rays pitcher in the lower minors. His FB/CB combo is very intriguing and his frame is very projectable. He induces an above average amount of groundballs and also shows promise with his change-up. The only thing holding him back is the very inconsistent control of his pitches. He tried to hit the corners, which when working made the A-ball hitters look foolish. If it didn't work, however, the result wasn't pretty. Hence, excellent starts were followed by catastrophic ones. His control, therefore, determines the fate of Enny Romero - the pitcher.

Despite ongoing inconsistency throughout his first full pro-season, his numbers improved during the season. The following table looks at 6 data points taken during the '11 season.

(Click at the image for a larger view)

The table shows that his results (ERA and FIP) improved from a 6.52/6.04 ERA/FIP at the 6th of May to 4.26/3.66 at the end of the season. Regarding the complementary statistics he improved slightly in BB/9 and H/9 during the season while holding his K/9 at a higher level. The stats tell me that - after trying to avoid his control problems by pitching a bit more for contact in May/June - he got a bit more comfortable with his pitches as the season progressed. Despite still, due to control problems, highly varying starting performances in the summer months, he managed to improve his results by trusting his abilities. I look forward to seeing more of that while having him working at his control for all of his career. If he improves in this department the same way Matt Moore did in '10 and '11, Enny Romero has a future as an above average major league starting pitcher.

Prospect A to Z Day 4: Frank De Los Santos

This is a new feature on the site, mainly because we're still in the doldrums of prospect season and we want to get discussion going. We'll be going through the alphabet in October and November to pick one prospect a day before our top prospect coverage starts in December. There's no real rhyme or reason to who we'll talk about, and we're open to suggestions for some letters.

Frank De Los Santos has methodically risen through the system a level each year, from Princeton in 2007 up to Montgomery this year. 2011 was the first season he worked primarily as a reliever, but two things he's always been able to do is have success against lefties and get groundballs.

This season with the Biscuits, he held lefties to a .228 while posting a 25-to-3 strikeout-to-walk rate (compared to 23-20 vs. RHB) and a 2.54 GO/AO against them. Last season with Charlotte, it was a 35-8 K-BB rate and a 2.09 FIP vs. lefties. For his career, his 2011 GO/AO of 1.98 was his lowest mark.

He especially seemed to thrive as a reliever. In 19.1 innings as a starter, he allowed 12 earned runs with a 13-10 K-BB rate. In 59.1 innings as a reliever, he allowed 19 earned runs with a 35-13 K-BB. He held opponents to a .236 average out of the bullpen compared to .385 as a starter.

As a small (listed at 6-0/165) lefty who's vulnerable to right-handers, his path to the majors is a lefty specialist. It's a role the Rays may have an opening for in 2012 or 2013, as J.P. Howell is a non-tender candidate and Cesar Ramos was good but not great against lefties. De Los Santos figures to start next season with Durham's bullpen, but if Ramos is ineffective or suffers an injury, the Rays may come calling for De Los Santos if they want a lefty specialist.

Two other candidates for that role (not in 2012, most likely) are C.J. Riefenhauser and Adam Liberatore. Riefenhauser spent the year as a starter, and likely will continue that role in 2012, but he was death on lefties. I can't find his splits with Bowling Green but in 37 innings with Charlotte, lefties hit .147 against him, which is close to the BG number. Liberatore is pitching in the Arizona Fall League, but he too had success against LHBs during the season with Charlotte.

Prospect A to Z Day 3: Robinson Chirinos

My apologies for a short post today. I thought the letter C was a good time to talk about catchers, specifically, the Rays 2012 situation. Kelly Shoppach, John Jaso, Robinson Chirinos, and Jose Lobaton all figure to be in the mix, with Nevin Ashley on the 40-man roster as well. Who do you want to see in 2012?

There was a very comprehensive piece on this last week at DRaysBay.

Prospect A to Z Day 2: Blake Snell

This is a new feature on the site, mainly because we're still in the doldrums of prospect season and we want to get discussion going. We'll be going through the alphabet in October and November to pick one prospect a day before our top prospect coverage starts in December. There's no real rhyme or reason to who we'll talk about, and we're open to suggestions for some letters.

I don't actually have a whole lot to say about Blake Snell. I picked him for the letter B because I want to talk about high school pitching in general, but let's start with Snell's season. He was one the Rays gazillion supplemental picks, 52nd overall. The left-hander signed quickly and got into 11 games for the GCL Rays, pitching 26.1 innings.

26.1 innings in the lowest level of the minors hardly means much, but he did strike out just under a batter per inning (26) and walked an acceptable 11. He's tall and lean at 6-4/180 but there's some questions about his true projectability because his frame doesn't look to allow for much more weight to be added. Then again, his fastball is in the 88-92 mph range as is, touching 94, so he's not hurting too badly there. As with almost all high school pitcher, the development of his secondary stuff -- and his ability to locate -- is key. He'll start the year in extended spring training and likely pitch with Princeton in 2012.

The Rays, of course, had 12 of the first 89 picks in 2012. Snell was one of just two high school pitchers in that group (the other was Taylor Guerrieri). In fact, after Snell, the next high school pitcher selected was Jacob Faria in the 10th round. This isn't really a new trend for the Rays. Here's the list of high school pitching drafted (in the first 25 rounds) and signed going back to 2008:

2010: Ian Kendall (5); Brandon Henderson (15); Matt Spann (25)
2009: Kevin James (9); Andrew Bellatti (12); Jacob Partridge (18)
2008: Kyle Lobstein (2); Shawn Smith (9); Bradley Furdal (11); Jason McEachern (13); Trevor Shull (19)

Now, just because you aren't drafting high school pitching highly doesn't mean you won't get a star (see: Matt Moore, eighth round) but clearly the Rays haven't placed a premium on it, especially in the last three years. The ones taken in the top 10 rounds have especially disappointed: Lobstein never re-gained his fastball, Shawn Smith has totaled 67 innings in three years due to injuries and personal issues, and Kevin James has walked more than a hitter per inning.

As a result, the pitching depth at the lower levels is lacking. McEachern, Henderson, Spann, Bellatti, and Partridge are all somewhat intriguing, but only Guerrieri is on the level that Wade Davis, Jake McGee, Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Moore, and Nick Barnese (along with some flameouts like Matt Walker) were at as short-season pitchers. Enny Romero and Felipe Rivero have been nice international finds.

My point? The pitching depth in the low levels is as weak as it's been for at least a few years. The Rays haven't drafted high school pitching as much and no lower-ceiling college picks have broken out (Merrill Kelly, Shane Dyer, Devin Fuller) although they've recently gotten Jesse Hahn and Ryan Carpenter, who don't fit that mold.

If the bats they'd been drafting instead had worked out, then maybe this isn't an issue. But the organization is thin between the guys at the top (Tim Beckham, Hak-Ju Lee, Brandon Guyer) and the players several years away (Drew Vettleson et al from the 2010 draft). This means the team might need Snell (or Spann or Henderson etc) to work out more than you might think.

A - Chris Archer
B - Blake Snell

Prospect A to Z Day 1: Chris Archer

This is a new feature on the site, mainly because we're still in the doldrums of prospect season and we want to get discussion going. We'll be going through the alphabet in October and November to pick one prospect a day before our top prospect coverage starts in December. There's no real rhyme or reason to who we'll talk about, and we're open to suggestions for some letters.

Before the season, it seemed that Montgomery could boast arguably the best rotation in the minors, headlined by Matt Moore and Chris Archer and with Nick Barnese and Joe Cruz ready to break out. But while Moore exploded onto the season to pitch seven shutout innings in Game 1 of the ALDS, the other three failed to take off.

After finished 2010 in the Southern League as a member of the Cubs organization, Archer was primed for a mid-season jump to Durham. But he struggled with his control: 86 walks, 10 hit batters, and 18 wild pitches in 134.1 innings with the Biscuits, and got bumped to Durham only for his final two starts. In some ways, it wasn't surprising. With Tennessee in 2010, he had walked 5 batters per 9 innings; his overall "improvement" in that department was solely from his time in the Florida State League.

Additionally, Archer's strikeout rate was a career-low 7.9 per innings. The good news here is that he's still got the potential to dominate. His fastball and slider both rate as at least plus pitches, though unsurprisingly he needs to do a better job of getting ahead with the fastball so he can unleash the slider. His change-up made some progress but still grades out below-average. He showed what he can do in his final start of the year, in the playoffs with Durham, when he struck out 11 in 5.2 innings.

One comparison that jumps to mind is Edwin Jackson. The two have similar stuff (hard fastball, power slider, iffy changeups), both are athletic, and both had trouble throwing strikes. Jackson did limit the walks to 3.2 per 9 as a 19-year-old in the Southern League, but obviously had some issues at other points in his career. He made the big leagues at age 20, but wasn't a regular starter until age 23 and probably wasn't truly "ready" until age 24. I think you'll see the same thing with Archer. He'll pitch all of next season at age 23 and be ready for a big-league spot in 2013 as a 24-year-old.

What do you guys think of Chris Archer?

Dominican Winter League Preview

The Dominican Winter League begins play today and will run through December 21. The DWL All-Star Game will be held on December 13.

Below are the Rays players that I was able to track down in the DWL so far. MLB does not have current rosters posted so I got this information for the individual team sites. I may have missed a few players due to lack of comprehension of Spanish on my side and several rosters not posted yet (Leones del Escogido, Tigres del Licey and Toros del Este).

Here are the Rays on opening day rosters in the DWL:

  • P Chris Andujar (Estrellas de Oriente)
  • P Richard De Los Santos (Estrellas de Oriente)
  • IF Omar Luna (Aguilas Cibaenas)
  • P Joel Peralta (Gigantes del Cibao)

On an interesting note, former Ray Manny Ramirez will be playing in the DWL this winter for the Aguilas Cibaenas.

I will update this roster list once official rosters are released on MLB.com in the future.
